Wabanaki Studies: Getting Started

Teaching about cultures and complex histories can be challenging, but can also provide meaningful opportunities for reflection. In partnership with our Native American Advisory Board, the Burke Education team has developed the following suggestions to help guide these discussions with your students, parents, communities, and fellow educators.

This list of "dos and don'ts" was developed for teachers at Portland Public Schools. The list is organized by topic, such as language and terminology, resources, cultural appropriation, and more.

A PDF of the Abbe Museum's Guide to Evaluating Resources. This is a good resource for teachers to use. You might also consider asking students to evaluate resources.

Developed by the National Museum of the American Indian, this one page document provides guidelines for selecting literature.
