On April 8, 2024, Maine will be in the path of a solar eclipse. A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and the earth. The moon blocks the light from the sun and casts a shadow on the earth. In a total eclipse, the sun is blocked out completely. Parts of Maine will experience the total eclipse. In Scarborough, we will not experience the full solar eclipse, but we will experience a partial eclipse of 92%.
The resources on this page will help you to learn more about the upcoming eclipse and eclipses in general.
Umbra: Umbra is Latin for shadow. It describes a complete shadow that goes along with the total blocking of light.
Penumbra: the partially shaded outer region of a shadow.
